Christ commanded His followers to go
and make disciples of all the world. The mission of our evangelism program
is “to encourage Grace Church members to share their faith in Christ with
those who do not know Him, and to welcome those who turn to Grace Church
hoping to find Him in our midst.” In furtherance of this mission, the
program sponsors several ministries.
Coordinators
Khacki Berry is the 2008 vestry
coordinator and John Berry is the non-vestry coordinator for the Evangelism Program.
Greeters meet and welcome visitors
after services, guide them around the church, provide them with information
about the parish, introduce them to parishioners, and give them the
opportunity to check in with the newcomers' table at coffee hour. Other
volunteers and the clergy stay in contact with visitors via letters, phone
calls, email and home visits.
St. Andrew's Guild
Grace Church's
newest guild was formed last year to focus purposefully on welcoming
newcomers to Grace and to make follow-up calls to strengthen the likelihood
they will choose to worship with us. John and Khacki Berry are the
coordinators of the St. Andrew's Guild.
Visitors are invited to semi-annual
dinners at a parishioner's home, where they have a chance to meet the clergy
and members of the parish and learn more about Grace. Volunteers host and
staff the dinners.
For the past several years, Grace
Church has run a balloon booth at Art on the Avenue, a festival held on Mt.
Vernon Avenue in Alexandria every October
. By giving out balloons that fill
the avenue with color, we make ourselves known to the community around us.
Report from October 6, 2007 Art
on the Avenue: Parishioners, parents and children of Grace Church and
Grace School combined forces to give out more than 1000 balloons and 100 dog
biscuits as part of our evangelism booth for the annual Art on the Avenue
fair on Mt. Vernon Avenue last Saturday. Grace School parents talked to
interested families and the parish offered cards announcing the Blessing of
the Animals the following day. One family even joined us at church for the
9:00 AM service! Many thanks to the 50 volunteers who helped us staff the
booth from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM—and in 90 degree weather!
