Worship Program

Coordinators

Cynthia Puskar is the vestry program coordinator for 2008 and Jeff Gustafson is the non-vestry program coordinator for the worship program.

Acolyte Corps

Acolytes play an important role in our worship and include both adults and young people.

Adults assist at the Eucharist at the 7:30 AM and the 5:00 AM Sunday services, as well as at the daily services. Training is required, and interested adults may contact Anne Caputo for more information.

Youth from fourth grade through high school assist at the 9:00 AM and the 11:15 AM Sunday services during the academic year and the 10:00 a.m. service during the summer, as well as special services. Training is provided on Mondays at 7:30 PM as announced. Interested young people should contact Father Malm.

Altar Guild

Altar Guild members prepare the altars, sanctuary, vestments, and flowers for all worship services, including daily and Sunday celebrations of the Holy Eucharist, marriages, baptisms, confirmations, and burials. Service is rotated among the members. Membership is at the invitation of the rector, and training is required. Ruth Corlett is the 2008 Easter President and Ashby Rushing will be the 2008 Christmas President.

Altar Flowers

Altar Flowers are given by parishioners as an expression of gratitude to God for special events in their lives such as births, marriages or anniversaries, in general thanksgiving or in memory of persons who have died. After Sunday worship, the flowers are taken to  parish shut-ins and hospital patients. Those wishing to give flowers may sign up on the calendar in the narthex or call Liz Saalfeld.

Choirs

There are choir programs for the 9:00 AM and the 11:15 AM services during the academic year.

  •  The Alleluia Singers is a cross-generational choir; children and teenagers from grade five up join with adults to sing regularly at the 9:00 AM service. Repertoire includes music from all styles, and singers get a grasp of music theory during the course of rehearsals. They rehearse on Wednesday evenings from 7:15 to 8:45 PM. They often join with the Schola Cantorum for major feasts and celebrations.

  •  The St. Nicholas Choir is for children in grades one through four. Rehearsals are held on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 7:00 PM. The choir usually sings at the 9:00 AM service every 4 to 6 weeks during the school term.

  •  The Schola Cantorum—“School of Singing”—regularly leads worship at the 11:15 AM service and at major evening feast day celebrations. Its repertoire ranges from the great composers of the Renaissance to music by living composers. Schola rehearses on Thursday evenings, from 8:15 to 9:45 PM. Trebles in grade five and above are welcome to sing with this choir.

  •  The Handbell Choir (another cross-generational group) meets Thursday evenings from 7:00 to 8:00 PM to learn bell-ringing techniques and to prepare music to enhance worship services. Music reading skills are also taught, so no one need stay away if they are unable to read music.

  •  Grace Church Choral Society, for all who enjoy singing but can’t commit to a year-long schedule, meets for two five-week periods to prepare and perform a major choral work (often with orchestral accompaniment). Rehearsals are on Tuesday evenings from 8:00 to 9:30 PM, and are open to parishioners and friends throughout the community.

For more information or to join one of the choirs, please contact Thom Robertson at the church (703-549-1980).

Element Bearers

Parishioners are encouraged to present the elements of bread and wine on behalf of the congregation at the 9:00 AM and 11:15 AM Sunday services. Ushers ask different parishioners to serve as element bearers each week.

La Eucaristía en Español

La Eucaristía en Español is a weekly celebration of the Holy Eucharist in Spanish on Sunday at 9:00 AM in the St. John Room of Merrow Hall.

Eucharistic Ministers

Lay Eucharistic Ministers assist the clergy during the celebration of the Holy Eucharist by bearing the chalice and bread to those receiving Holy Communion.

Training is required, and the Bishop licenses those who have been selected and trained. Interested persons should contact the clergy. Lisa Sprague is the coordinator.

On a monthly basis, Lay Eucharistic Ministers take Communion to the sick and shut-ins. Jean and Lucy-Lee Reed are the coordinators for home communions.

Lectors

Lectors assist during the conduct of the public worship by reading the appointed biblical lessons. Individual training is provided. Otto Wolff is the coordinator.

Ushers

Ushers greet worshippers, assist with seating and movement of the congregation during the service, collect the offering and help newcomers with information and help clean up after services. Michelle Cox coordinates the Ushers for the 7:30 AM Sunday Eucharist, Brad Bergmann for the 9:00 AM service, and George and Pepper Lindroth for the 11:15 AM service.
