Dear Friends in Christ—
We have two parish celebrations this weekend. They seem very different, but they are actually the same.
On Sunday morning, we observe Candlemas, more formally known as the Feast of the Presentation. (The actual feast day is February 2; we break the prayer book rules and celebrate it on the Sunday following.). During this service, traditionally, the candles to be used for the coming year are blessed. The gospel recounts Simeon and Anna meeting the infant Jesus as he is being presented in the temple and recognizing him as the light of the world.
On Sunday evening, we observe the Chili Bowl. This holy event is not found in scripture. But it has become a part of our life together, as different groups and individuals make chili and offer us all the chance to enjoy a feast.
How are they alike?
Both events give us an encounter with the beloved other. At Candlemas, two senior citizens spot a baby and realize they are seeing the face of God. At the Chili Bowl, we will enjoy closeness with one another—eating, laughing—and so experience love in community. Which, in the end, also looks a lot like God.
The last few years have given all of us too much isolation. This church now offers encounter instead. I hope you will come and, in doing so, discover something of God’s presence among us.
Yours in Christ,
Anne+
