I once heard of an Episcopal Church that elected their vestry by means of a lottery. The name of every confirmed, able-bodied adult communicant, known to the treasurer, was placed into a box. At the annual meeting the number of names needed to fill the vestry were pulled out of the box. It was the mindset of this parish that every adult member had potential for leadership and a responsibility to serve.
While I’ve never tried this, I like the theology of it. For I do believe that by virtue of our baptism we have all been given spiritual gifts to be used to further the reign of God in ministry. And as I have experienced, it can be surprising what a person can do given a chance for leadership. I remember in one parish being told as the new rector that only one person was qualified to serve as the senior warden. No doubt the person was highly qualified and yet I had also noted subtle gifts for leadership in one of the younger, newer, quieter members. Guess what happened? The vestry took a chance on the new member and they turned out to be an excellent senior warden.
All this to say I am very grateful for the eleven individuals who are willing to put their name forward for the vestry of Grace Church this year. Please prayerfully read their bios and ask God for guidance as we elect six of them to serve. I am also grateful for Dan, Lauren, Mary, Rushad, Keith, Eleanor, Jane, Andrew, and Geoff who will be continuing on the vestry. And as we will recognize them in the annual meeting, I am grateful for the leadership of those who will be rotating off the vestry: Carlos, Tracy, Evan, Bill, Robby and Khacki who was fulfilling a one-year term.
See you on Sunday at 10:30am up in the Auditorium for Worship and the Annual Meeting!
